Under the weather.

Where does this saying come from? Can anyone explain to me what being under the weather feels like?

Where ever it comes from... that's what I am feeling I guess.

Don't get too close to your computer screen... you might catch it.

Ben, you ask, I answer. After serious research and one indepth google search I present the following as an offering of well wishes:

Origin of "Under the weather"

UNDER THE WEATHER - "Ik Marvel, a pseudonym that resulted from a misprinting of J.K. Marvel, was the pen name of American author Donald Grant Mitchell. In his 'Reveries of a Bachelor' (1850) Ik Marvel is the first to record 'under the weather,' which has been a synonym for everything from 'ill and indisposed' to 'financially embarrassed' and 'drunk,' and has even been a synonym for 'the discomfort accompanying menstruation." From "Encyclopedia of Word and Phrase Origins" by Robert Hendrickson (Facts on File, New York, 1997).

If you are under the weather - and this is a very common expression - then you are slightly unwell. In England, as I'm sure you know, we have lots of bad weather that people are always complaining about: lots of rain, lots of wind and lots of cloudy days when don't see the sun. This can be very depressing, so it is as if you are affected by the weather.

"Under the weather" is a nautical term that was originated, I believe, in the British navy. When a sailor was ill, he was kept below decks, and thus, under the weather.

When it's gray and rainy out, does that affect how you feel? This expression comes from the idea that bad weather might hurt a person's health and mood. The saying also may be related to "under the weather bow," the part of a boat that will take the force of rough seas during stormy weather. If you were in that part of the boat, you might get seasick!

So that's what I found. Now I don't expect smart points but maybe a bit of name calling, specifically NERD.

Hope you feel better friend.
